Subject: [ferrethealth] chronic suppurative and hyperplastic dermatitis; REPLY TO STEPH, PLEASE
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Stephanie has been having trouble getting this to post. I think the problem is that there is an attached photo and attachments can cause failure of any post content to appear and sometimes just cause the post to fail completely.

I am carrying this to the list for Stephanie. In direct replies, please, respond to HER ADDRESS in the bottom of her post.

Please forgive me for jumping right in here, but I'm going to skip right to the issue at hand, since time is of the essence. I have a 4-5 year old shelter ferret, male, albino, white Daryl -- appears otherwise healthy.
History: Caught respiratory infection from me in March 2006, was on amoxi for cough/wheezing, and tresaderm for yeast infection in ears. Exact same spot as amoxi dropper was given, developed a sore on his lips. Treated with vitamin E oil, treated with vitamin E oil and aloe vera oil. No improvement. Saw vet, was put on regimen of cepha drops for the sores/crusting on his lips. Spread all over his mouth and to his paws. Put on regimen of baytril. Received shot of dexamethasone. Was put under anesthesia for biopsy of lesions and skin scrapings. Fungal culture was done. Blood taken. Sores/scabs have now spread over his entire body and while they are not all open and bleeding, they definitely have spread since the baytril (see attached photos). They are also on all four paws and crack when he spreads his toes or if I try to cut his nails.
Results of tests:
No fungus. No mites. Histopathy diagnosis of lesion: chronic suppurative and hyperplastic dermatitis (not done by a ferret lab). I have the bloodwork results, but rather than post here, would rather fax to anyone who needs them.
My problem is that my vets (I have seen 4 to date) are stumped. They do not know what else to do. White Daryl's attitude is great, he's eating, stools look ok. But he is getting worse, the sores are multiplying. This is not contagious. He is current on distemper and rabies vaccines and has been for his life (I received records with him). Am seriously considering that if he's suffering and there is no cure, that it would be best for him to be put down, but I don't want to give up on him if there is something we can try or if anyone has seen this before and has an answer. The poor boy is sweet as can be, the nicest ferret, but is just a mess. His identical twin brother, red Daryl, is fine.
Can anyone help? Has anyone seen this before? Is there any hope or help for him? Your time and effort is so appreciated. I'm hoping to be able to give my vet some feedback soon. Thank you in advance for your help with this. When responding, please cc me at steph@ferretservices.com as well. Stephanie
