This topic is dear to out heart right now, too, because Hilbert has redeveloped shoulder sores after they responded to steroids the last time when the other side was affected.
Yesterday Hilbert had two skin biopsies taken.
Knowing that he does not have fleas some of the things we have to consider and eliminate or find and treat are:
1. allergies (We are doing sequential eliminations of possible causes.)
2. demodex or sarcoptes mites (There are excellent past posts in the FHL Archives)
3. cutaneous lymphoma (Ditto for archive posts. Those of Pam Sessoms have given real comfort.)
4. adrenal neoplasia (That is unlikely in Hilbert's case. When he had his bladder diverticulum and cystine stone blockage the adrenals were both badly inflamed by the the huge kidneys. The left came out cleanly, but his Cava had some problems when the right was being done so some pieces wound up under a vascular clamp. He needs Fludrocort and Prednisolone but some rare ferrets do wind up without steroid making parts of the adrenal cortex but with fragments that can generate hormones.)
5. Today Dr. Bruce Williams reminded Stephanie to consider pemphigus, or at least immune-mediated disease, which is something else that we, too, will need to keep in mind till more is known when the biopsies come back.
Meanwhile, Hilbert is happy but very itchy at this point.
Hopefully, effective answers can be found both for Stephanie's little darling and for ours.
