Subject: [ferrethealth] Vaccine reaction vs. something else
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Hi all,
I don't post often, but am very upset and need some guidance from those of =
you who are more up on the health info of the ferret world. =
I took my Roxie (2.5 years old) in yesterday at 3:30pm for her shots. My v=
et always gives both IMRAB-3 and Fervac-D at the same visit. Roxie has nev=
er had a reaction before, and her last set of vaccines was last April. The=
vet gave her her shots and she was fine initially, she was itching a lot, =
but nothing too concerning (my Sammy had a bad reaction last year while we =
were still at the vets and is fine now so I thought I knew what I was looki=
ng for). Anyway, we took her home, ran out to do some errands, and came ba=
ck and I checked on her around 6:45pm. There was blood with some feces and=
urine so I couldn't tell which it was in. I called the vet immediately an=
d they said that they didn't think it was a vaccine reaction but it could b=
e, and that it shouldn't continue, but that if it did, to give her some chi=
ldren's benadryl and I verified what dose and gave it to her as soon as I g=
ot off the phone with them. I had checked her butt and urethra and both lo=
oked fine. I came back to check on her at 11pm and she was eating, looked =
fine, but wanted out of her cage (what ferret doesn't) so I took her out an=
d checked her over, and found that she had blood on the outside of her uret=
hra as well as a prolapsed rectum. She has a history of prolapsed rectums,=
she had one in January and another in February. We had tried different me=
dicines, both times it was put back in and sutured up for a week and then t=
he stitches removed. I took her in tonight and they want to do a biopsy. =
Fine. I asked if it could be from having diarrhea and her GI tract being i=
rritated and her already prone condition to having these prolapsed rectums =
and the vet said maybe (I'd never met this vet before although she's suppos=
ed to be ferret knowledgeable, my vet had gone home for the night), but tha=
t she wanted to do a biopsy to see if there is something going on to cause =
this to continue happening. I don't have a problem with that, but I do hav=
e a problem with this being a recurring issue, not to mention one that is n=
ot cheap to have being fixed every 3 weeks to 4 months.
I was wondering if the vets on the forum though this might be related to a =
vaccine reaction this time, if so, should I continue to get her vaccinated =
at different times for the rabies and distemper shots. I ask that because =
Sammy is due for his shots in July and my vet wants to premedicate him with=
benadryl for two days before the shots and do the shots seperately, two we=
eks apart. I wonder if it's even worth continuing to vaccinate the ones wh=
o have had reactions if the rest of the critters in the household are vacci=
nated. I was also wondering what they think could be found on a biopsy. A=
lso, is there anything else that can be done to help her from having these =
prolapsed rectums, is there a permanent fix?
Thanks so much for your help.
Jen
