Subject: [ferrethealth] Stumped - An URGENT question for any of the vets
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Will try to give a quick summary:

Sienna had injured eye; eye was removed due later due to not knowing if there was
a growth, etc pushing the eye out after it did not completely heal over time. 1st
surgery - something was sent off to be tested - I guess what the vet found and all
was clear. 6 months later, had to have the eye operated on again because the eye
socket swelled up again. "Brown goo" found in the eye - vet cleaned out and put
stitches on the outside. Several days later and she was with us on vacation - Sienna
scratched out her stitches - so found a doctor in Ohio to do emergency surgery - he
closed the eye again with stitches in the eye socket as well as closing off the tear
duct. Eye has healed wonderfully. During that time - the second culture from our
doctor here came back she had MRSA. Gave her Chloramphenicol (sp?) for a few
days until we hoped it had kicked it - I believe 9 days. Had to take her off of it
because the medicine was so harsh on her gut but this was the only medicine the
MRSA would respond to - not baytril, etc.

Sienna's glucose is fine and bloodwork is fine but now after all of that, she is barely
putting on weight. She almost resembles a very young ferret. She is five. She is
eating, pooping and drinking fine - although seems to be a tad bit dehydrated but I
have faithfully been getting fluids down her every day and supplimenting her diet of
totally ferret with chicken baby food with broth - as Dr. recommends.
Although all of her hair is growing in on her head and forearms from the surgeries,
she is loosing her hair. The only thing I did recently was I bought a bag of the
Totally Ferret for older ferrets - kind of switched them cold turkey. So, wondering if
it was that - i bought a bag of the regular Totally Ferret and started giving her that
again. Haven't noticed much difference in the last few days. She's not any more
lethargic than her 6 year old sister is with just normal play time.

>From her surgery until now - she's actually gained weight. We had a scare one night
after we got back from vacation where she got super dehydrated so she stayed in
the hospital for 2 days getting fluids and A/D. I then brought her home and
continued that treatment until she was eating/drinking again on her own.

Last visit to the vet -I had her blood work done and also told the vet about her
itching a lot. Well -now the itching has stopped but she's still just not putting the
weight back on and her coat seems dry.

With her blood work coming up fine, poop, pee, drinking and eating are fine as well
- I'm just stumped by this. If she is adrenal shouldn't her white blood cell count
been way up on her blood work? (Had her blood work done in April and just a
couple of weeks ago as well as the glucose).

I just don't want to wait too long for adrenal to set in if that's even the problem.

Does IBD cause them to loose their hair? I was reading Dr. article about that. Can
you give a ferret yogurt to coat their stomach like we do to put good flora back into
their system? This is the ferrets first year here in Chicago where they have
experienced a true 4 seasons - I was previously in Florida.

I'm just really confused as to what could be up with my little girl.

Any advice would be helpful.

Karen
