Subject: [ferrethealth] Lymph nodes enlarged, very tender "blood blister"
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

What do tumors on the skin look like? Do they hurt?
What (and what else) can a swollen "armpit" lymph node be, what tests do I run, and what can I do about it?

Buddy's had insulinoma (well-controlled), and has been slowly developing adreanl symptoms, including itchy skin w/light scabbing almost exclusively behind his ears. I've been baffled that he struggles so much when I put cortisone or antibiotic ointment on it. Today I found what seems to be a slightly swollen blood blister (about the size of a ferret eye) on his leg, which I'm hoping isn't some sort of tumor. That seems very sensitive to touch too, and he really hates me getting near it. (This is a ferret who doesn't even need to be held to get an IM shot, so that's really saying something.) What can I do about this?

I then felt around his armpits, and he does have something going on in both. It's about the mass of my thumb from the knuckle up, though slightly more elongated and narrow--about jelly bean shaped. It's slightly squishy but does seem contained. How do I figure this out--xray, ultrasound (don't know that I can get one of those around here but I could try), biopsy, something else?

This is the same old guy who keeps getting different diagnoses from different vets. First a tumor on the heart, a day or so to live." Then a stone in a strange place and no tumor but "maybe something going on around the heart." Then no stone, but possible thyroid problems and "maybe something going on around the heart." So I guess I'd feel better if I could get a diagnoses based on some sort of lab result, seeing as how diagnostic instinct (and even xray interpretation) seem to be all over the map with him.

Thanks,
Clover
