Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma Unresolved After Surgery

Reading your post, it sounds like you are either medicating, feeding, or testing BG constantly. I wonder how she (or you) gets any rest at all. That has got to be stressful for her. Maybe you should rely more on symptoms rather than testing multiple times each day. Meds and feedings can be adjusted as needed. Human glucometers are not entirely accurate on ferrets so I would look more at the symptoms rather than the numbers. You may want to have your vet check her BG every few days for more controlled testing.

I had an experience with one of mine who crashed despite twice a day pred. She spent 3 days in the hospital after a very bad crash that I found her in when I got home from work. We realized that she was crashing 9-10 hours after her pred doses. So, I went to 3 x day pred (ran home at lunch every day to feed and medicate). That sustained her for a good long time. I use Pediapred (1mg/1mL) and she was getting .80mL each time, along with 40mL syringe-fed soup. I think my soup recipe also helped keep her BG up. I use A/D, Gerbers meat, Carnivore Care powder, and water (or Pedialyte). This mixes well and can easily be fed through a syringe. I also left kibble for her but she never really touched it. She also wouldn't really eat soup on her own.

If she is staying dehydrated despite sub-q fluids, then you probably need to give more, and more frequently.

As for maximum pred doses, at this point I would gradually increase the doses until she stabilizes. Once she remains stable for a while, you can try gradually backing down a little bit. I normally do this in .05-.10mL increments.

Maybe her treatment is not as intense and constant as it sounds, but it tired me out just reading about it. I wonder how well she is coping with it, both physically and mentally.
