One problem is that it sounds like your vet is afraid of Pred.

Prednisone and Prednisolone are not particularly prone to causing problems in ferrets, compared to other species. Some get ulceration and for that reason is is wise to give the meds with food and to use Carafate at times that are separated from food or other meds if the doses are large or the ferret is prone to ulcers.

When Prednisone is given the liver must turn it into Prednislone for the body to use it, so if the liver even might be compromised it pays to remember that there can be more effect per dose level for Prednisolone than for Prednisone. We almost never use Prednisone any longer ourselves.

Yes, giving the Pred 3 times a day instead of twice has also helped some of ours. I have been told that Pred has about a 9 hour action, so when given 2 times a day there will be times which are past those 9 hours.

When we had ones who would sleep past feedings we kept food dishes right next to the beds most often used so the ferret could just lean out for food. Hopefully, there is still enough willingness to eat kibble that this is an option.

Pred doses can actually be pretty high with ferrets. When between a choice of trying a higher Pred dose or giving a mercy shot then it pays to try more Pred on a what-the-ferret-will-tolerate basis. We have given as high as 5 mg/day to a tiny female.

The dosing in _Essentials of Ferrets, a Guide for Practitioners_ for Diazoxide is 5-30 mg/kg q 12 hours, and for either Pred it goes as high as 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours for general use in a ferret, but if your vet decides to try every 8 hours for med then divide the total by three.
