Subject: [ferrethealth] effect of barium on stool coloration
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

My ferrets have been given barium as a GI tract protectent (yesterday).

In an otherwise health ferret, what will this do to the color of the stool over the next 24-48 hours. We have seen white and (strange shade of) yellow early in the first 24 hours and now are seeing very dark brown (possibly black) in one of the three ferrets treated.

I am trying to figure out if I should be freaking out over "black tar" or if I should relax because its barium related. On FM I trust says I should freak out... but I have a vague memory that on the human diagnostic use of barium that black stool is a late 24 hour to 48 hour effect....

Am I making this up (wishful thinking)?

The good news is that for the first time in five weeks my kit (Raven Riot) did not have frank blood in her stool.

Thanks
