Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Mycobacterium kansasii in ferret
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Just a quick note. There has just been some work finished by a team led by Adrian VS Hill of Oxford indicating that there can be genetic susceptibility for at least one strain of mycobacteria (the tuberculosis one) among humans (3 genetic variations found), so it may be that some ferrets are genetically more likely to develop a mycobacterium infection than others. (I had no idea that about a third of people carry the tuberculosis mycobacterium but only 10% develop the disease.)
