Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] FERRETS AND BIRDS
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

The fact that ferrets will kill birds is the reason that I have the the ferret I have now. My husband worked at a small zoo in Kissimmee Fl in 2002, and someone who worked there had a young ferret which he did not want anymore. He brought her to the zoo, and she was kept in her cage behind the storefront in an office. Also in the office was a Cockatoo who was being kept there while friends of the owners were out of town. The Cockatoo roamed free in the office area, and had a perch, and was quite happy. Different employees would come in & out and play with the little, cute ferret. Someone did not close her door properly, and she was out and about without supervison, and when my husband went back to the office at closing, he noticed the cockatoo on the floor dead with blood showing at his neck area. He found the ferret in the nearby bathroom rumaging and playing with the tissue in the trash can.

The ferret had only been at the zoo for about a week, and after the "kill" the other employees wanted to toss her in to the cage with the Tigers, and that would be that. Well my husband promptly brought her home, and little Sneeki has been a delight to us ever since, 1 adrenal and 1 insulinoma surgery since. She's 4.5 years now, and we always tell her she's the Warrior Princess! Sneeki was only about 6 months when she had the encounter with the Cockatoo, and trust me, the instinct in ferrets is strong to kill their natural prey.
