Subject: [ferrethealth] BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin and Propyl Gallate
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

On a ferret message board I frequent was a post in regards to BHA, BHT, and
Ethoxyquin and the toxicity of these ingredients. This person is stating these
ingredients found in some ferret foods and ferret related products (for example,
FerretTone) are bad. Apparently, the Department Of Pathology, Nagoya City
University Medical School Japan, recently completed a study to determine the
toxicology of BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin and Propyl Gallate. Below is the results of the
study. Propy Gallate is not listed. Note: In this study, ferrets are not specifically
mentioned.

ETHOXYQUIN: Promoted kidney carcinogenesis. Significantly increased incidence of
stomach tumors. Enhanced bladder carcinogesis.
BHA: Enhanced stomach and urinary bladder carcinogenesis. Causes squamous-cell
carcinomas in stomachs (Cancers of this type are among the most lethal and fastest
acting, the swiftest effects being seen among animals with light colored fur.)
BHT: Promoted urinary bladder carcinogenesis Could be a promoter of thyroid
carcinogeneis

Apparently the person posting on the message board got their info from these two
websites.

http://www.groomers.com/tidbits/food.html
http://www.aplus-flint-river-ranch.com/define-ethoxyquin.php?win=small

Can anyone shed light on the above info? I would like to make sure the folks on the
message board I frequent get the correct info.

Thank you.
