Subject: [ferrethealth] Seizure with "barking"???
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Last night my 8 year old girl had what I thought was going to be a
small insulinoma-related seizure. She started drooling and was a bit
listless. All of a sudden, though, she peed all over herself and
started making some involuntary barking noises. I'd relate them to
nature shows I've seen of prairie dogs barking. I've never seen or
heard anything like it in the 15 years I've owned ferrets.

I called my vet (it was 9pm, of course) but he is out of town. The vet
on-call didn't know much about ferrets and none of the three emergency
vets in town had a ferret-knowledgeable vet available.

The heavy drooling, peeing in spurts, and barking went on for about 3
minutes. Then it stopped and she acted completely normal again. She
only seemed listless at the very beginning and never went into that
glazed-over stare that usually happens with low blood sugar. I warmed
up some of their chicken soup (that they eat every morning) and she
gobbled it up. I kept her with me all night and she's been acting
normal.

Any ideas what this was and what I should have her checked for when my
vet gets back to town?

Debi
