Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Seizure with "barking"???
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

She needs to have her insulinoma meds adjusted and her blood glucose levels taken by the vet again.

Is she on Prednsiolone and possibly also Diazoxide? Is the Prednisolone given 2 or perhaps even 3 times a day for best coverage? (A number of ferrets do best on having the dose split in three because the best action window of Pred is said to be about 9 hours.) Remember that ferrets are far more tolerant of Pred per kg body weight than most other animals so can have much higher dosing, but do give it with food. Remember, too, that since Prednisolone skips a liver processing step it can be much more effective than Prednisone if the liver is at all compromised.

There is a LOT in the FHL Archives on insulinoma.

As you noticed the sound is not intentional; it is caused by contractions of the diaphram pushing air in burst during the grande mal seizure. Sometimes it may sound like barking; other times like screaming. The individual in a grande mal seizure is totally unaware due to the electrical storming going on in the brain, so it is not from discomfort.
