I'm not a vet by any stretch, but have had 4 ferrets with insulinoma. What=
you're describing sounds like a seizure. The ones I've seen have varied in=
symptoms and severity, but I can describe some of my experiences. =
Peepa and Boy had involuntary urination and/or bowel movements during seizu=
res. I think that's fairly common.
Sometimes insulinomic ferrets have minor seizures that the owner doesn't no=
tice. These can happen when the ferret is asleep, and may not cause obvious=
after effects right away. The danger is that brain damage and increasingly=
severe seizures can result. I used to check my insulinomic ferrets for sig=
ns that they'd had "accidents" in their sleep to try to catch the problem b=
efore a full blown seizure happened. =
When Peepa had her first major seizure, she made a horrible barking sound, =
drooled, and snapped her teeth. I was prepared with Karo syrup, but I could=
only get a little into her without being badly bitten. I wore oven mitts t=
o wrap her in a blanket so I could race her to the vet. He stabilized her, =
but she was out of it for maybe half an hour after she came out of it. She =
had "aftershocks" in which she'd freak out, barking and snapping her jaws. =
These gradually decreased over maybe 3 days, and she had no lasting effect.=
About a week later, she had insulinoma surgery, which was an incredible su=
ccess.
