Subject: [ferrethealth] new insulinoma treatments
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

My 6-7 year old ferret, Komay, was diagnosed about a month ago with
insulinoma. I have been giving her .25 ml of prednisolone every morning
with Ferretone afterwards. I then give her some Totally Ferret treats
to ensure that she has eaten something.
She has always had a very sensitive stomach. Now, however, she has
been vomiting and she just does not look like she is feeling too well.
I did give her a very small amount of Pepcid AC last night. This
morning she was more alert but when I got home today she looked like she
really wasn't feeling well again.
My question is are there any new non-surgical treatments for
insulinoma? I really don't want to have to load her full of more
medicine just to take care of the side effects from the prednisolone.
Are there any other types of meds I can give her other than
prednisolone and prednisone that anyone can recommend? If so, what are
the pluses and minuses of giving her the meds?
Does anyone know if giving Ferretone right after administering
prednisolone can contribute to or cause her gastrointestinal discomfort?

My vet really does not have that much experience with ferrets so he
is not up to date on any new or experimental treatments.

Thank you in advance,

Sheryl
