Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: new insulinoma treatments
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

At least 30 minutes is better between food or med and Carafate. We usually provide an hour.

There is a liquid preparation that is designed for humans that is often better accepted by ferrets than versions compounded from the tablets, or than the tablets in water. We have almost never had a ferret who has fussed about it. This med can be gotten from any pharmacy.

Carafate is a wonderful med for bandaging ulcers in ferrets and we have also used it with great results when a ferret might be at risk for ulcers.

Diazoxide is very useful for some ferrets who have insulinoma.

In relation to the Preds:

Prednisolone can be more effective than Prednisone. It skips a liver processing step. We have had some ferrets for whom Prednisone might as well have been water but Prednislone was effective. A times that choice in med has allowed less to be used.

The window of optimal action is about 9 hours, so giving a Pred only once a day leaves 15 hours when the ferret is more vulnerable. That is why dividing the med between twice a day is better than once, and also why some ferrets are given the med divided among three times a day. For some ferrets injections work better.

In the archives you will also find past posts discussing the use of other steroids, and hopefully people who have used them will get a chance to respond to you, too.
