Subject: [ferrethealth] Peanut is at the Vets 07-01-06
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

We once again had to take Peanut to the vet this morning, we couldn't get her in to see Vet #2, so we took her to Vet #1 and when we got there, another ferret owner who works there came in to check her out. She was appalled at her condition.
She told me that if that was her ferret, the vet would have been doing surgery on Friday after the labs came back, which was June 23, 2006.
When the vet examined her again, he said that he wanted to take another regular xray because he felt that she was suffering from Ascites. At that point I said "NO!", if your going to do any kind of xray, it will be a Barium xray, to which he said that the barium probably wouldn't make it past the stomach due to the ascites.
I also told the vet I wanted her on IV fluids to help build her up, in case surgery is necessary, and he told us that IV fluids would do nothing to build her back up. Is this true?
Now, I have a question about ascites, can it block or prevent the barium from traveling down through her system? Can it be drawn off to relieve some of the pressure in her abdomen?
Peanut is a fighter and tho weak at this point in time, I'm hoping that if she has to have surgery she will make it through.
>From those that have had ferrets undergo surgery due to a blockage, what are we looking at as far as her recovery goes?
As I said earlier, she is on Hepato Support, Clavamox, GasX and just recently Laxatone. Is there anything else that might help her recovery?

Mary
