Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Peanut Update 06-29-06
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Peanut had a barium xray yesterday, after 6 hours, the barium stopped at a particular point in the large intestines and the vet said that was due to them needing to take another xray, but it was quitting time.
The vet said what was happening is that Peanut isn't keeping enough down to push the stool through the intestines, so it is setting in the colon area, which is drawing all the moisture out of it. So he recommended adding pumpkin for the fiber, and yogurt, for the active culture to try and replace some of the natural/good bacteria in her system. We did, and this morning when I got up, I found that she had actually vomited and her mouth and nose were covered with it.
She apparently has major liver damage from something, and the vet didn't want to do a tap to withdraw fluid to test, or insert a feeding tube, he said no one makes one small enough for her, he also didn't want to try to relieve the gas pressure from her stomach as he was afraid of contamination as he with drew the needle from her stomach.
We instructed them to place her on IV fluids, when we went to pick her up we asked about the fluids and were told that they offered her water out of a bowl, and that was it.
We told the vet that if he didn't know the answer to a question, please don't be embarrassed to tell us so, we would be more than happy to try and find the information to provide to him and that we were willing to let him learn on the kids here within reason. That is how our previous vet learned about ferrets.
They had never heard about DIMs, so I printed off the information sheet, and biopsy sheet and gave it to them. I also let them know that they could make copies to hand out to their other ferret owners. What surprised me is the vet tech I was talking to is owned by ferrets, works in a vets office, but had never heard of DIMs. :-o
Anyway, we are now giving her clavamox, hepato support, gasx, laxatone, she is getting the pumpkin, yogurt and ducksoup every 3 hours, except when I need to sleep, this has made me a nervous wreck and its hard to do things because of the constant shaking of my hands.
Luckily for us, she is very patient with us and allows us to administer her Sub-Q fluids without any problems twice a day. Feeding and giving medication is another story. :-|
