In our area a retired expert started business with a van (truck?) and used equipment. There were more limitations then than he has now, but he has been at it long enough that I am sure the equipment has improved greatly and I know the quality of the results have.
Some people have written of going to vet schools for the work, or to large clinics, specialty clinics, consults, or regional imaging centers.
