Subject: [ferrethealth] another coccidia question
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

As the owner of yet another ferret with occasional yellow
puddles of stinky stool, I am also wondering what's going on
with my ferret. My question about coccidia is, how
contaigious is it? My two ferrets share litter paper, food
bowl, water bottle, water fountain, sleeping areas,
everything--when they get linatone, they even lick each
other's faces clean :) But the other ferret, Seti, has never
shown that kind of stool, or even runny stool at all, stinky
or otherwise. He does get the occasional mucus plug, but
that's been happening since before he met Ronan. If Ronan has
coccidia, is it at all possible that Seti wouldn't come down
with it as well? And it is typical for this sort of stool
episode to last only 24 hours or so, with the stool then
gradually returning to normal?

I have a vet visit scheduled soon for Ronan, so I'm trying to
be as informed as possible. We're also in about the third
week of gradually switching over to a kibble without any corn
or rice in it, because the vet and I thought a food allergy
might be at the root of Ronan's problems, and I just think
it's healthier anyway. I know switching foods can cause
gastrointestinal disturbances for a few weeks, but this degree
seems a little excessive. At the same time, I don't want to
be trying so many remedies that we can no longer tell what the
problem was. Ronan has been on the standard amoxy-flagyl-etc
ulcer protocol before, to no real effect. We have not put him
on Albon, but as I said, I'm worried about confusing the issue
with the food change. If it seems extraordinarily unlikely
that Seti wouldn't also have come down with coccidia, then I
don't want to put Ronan on antibiotics for no reason...
