Update -
Shortly after the vet started us on the new round of Bayt/Metro (see early post)
Raven started showing very severe "my tummy hurts" behaviors/signs (pawing at
mouth, grinding teeth) and then started showing black (blood) in her stool. Vet
switched all three of them to Amox and Biaxin ($$$) plus Carafate for Raven.
After a day there was no difference and there was much more black in Raven stool.
Then Raven passed a piece of carpet tape that she apparently had eaten a few days
before. Then she when partially blocked for a day, loosing an ounce in two days....
and finally passed a huge piece of the tape.
Best I can tell the blockage issue ended at that point; no more pawing at mouth, no
more black in the poo.... but it made for one hell of a distraction from the long term
problem we are having (subject of this thread) with them.
We decided to go ahead and stick with the new set of meds (all were showing some
improvement at that point) for two weeks (which is up today - 7/6/06).
During the two weeks of Bax/Amox all three of them pretty much did as they have
been doing for a couple of months now.... Acting fine, maintaining weight, but
having stools that cycle between "raven poo" (mealy, too big around, light brown/
tan, stinky) then adding a touch of slime and some blood.... then getting a bit better
(sm. dia, darker)... as from day one this cycle has been on a 5-6 day cycle.
The last two cycle (blood today and about a week ago) have shown noticeably less
frank blood... but there stools have tended to be a little darker than usual (until
today) so I may simply not be seeing the blood in some stools. They have also
shown less slime (clear or green).
They are still having way to many loose (unformed) stools and occasional b.m. that
look like water with a streak of crunched up food sprinkled down the middle of it.
Dehy. problems have been increasing for all three of them but are still managable
w/o sub-q. All continue to gain weight. Raven has a pretty serious pred tummy
now... I am glad she is off that now. The older two's coats are noticably courser now
than they have ever been before. This is esp true of the male, but he as started
showing signs of A. D. during the past 4 weeks.
I don't know whither I should think that the improvement (less blood) is due to the
barium (1.5 cc 5 days apart) or to believe it is the Biaxin/Amox.
I am inclined to believe it was the Barium, and that I should see if our vet now things
it is time to try Albon.
I would love to know what the guru's make of the problem. Still coccidia? Any other
front runners?
Raven has had tummy problems now for over three months now, with the other two
some 3 or 4 weeks behind them. My vet keeps telling me that the blood is not as
bad as it seems and that they should not have (much?) permanent damage. Me, I
am still worried.
[Moderator's Question: AD? AD is Aleutian Disease and ADV is Aleutian Disease
Virus. Do you mean the abbreviation for adrenal disease? Adrenal-associated
endocrinopathy is abbreviated as AAE, not AD.]
