Coccidia is not the only "bug" that a kit can pass on to others. One that
nobody has mentioned is Desulfovribrio bacteria that causes proliferative
colitis. Symptoms -- watery diarrhea that can be bloody and/or mucousy, can be
scant and frequent. They can act painful, lose weight and become dehydrated. The
only way to get a definite diagnosis is apparently thru biopsy of the colon,
but abdominal palpation will show thickened intestines. Since albon, amoxi,
clavamox, and whatever else has been tried hasn't seemed to work, why not
consider a different pathogen? The way to clear desulfovribrio is chloramphenicol.
I've had a ferret with symptoms pretty similar to the ones that have been
described in this thread, and after treating with "normal" antibiotics to no
avail, I tried the chloramphenicol and the diarrhea cleared up and never
returned. Dr. Williams I *think* has posted about this before on here, or maybe I
got it from the FML years ago. Can't remember, but it is in the ferret medical
books, I just don't remember which one as they're packed in preparation for a
move. Anyway, proliferative colitis might be worth investigating since
nothing else seems to be working. Just a thought.

[Co-moderator's Note: if I recall right for one of the ferret families with such
problems the treating vet still has not tried Albon.

On my searching posts containing
Desulfovribrio
from
williams
do not show up in either the FHL or FML archives, but on further searching it might
show up as Lawsonia, or searching for Proliferative Bowel Disease may help.

It can be found in _Biology and Diseases of the Ferret, including as co-infection with
coccidia and that is how I found to look under the other two terms. I am sure that
one or anotehr will show up in other texts.
