Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Medication check in
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Low levels of Pred and Fludrocort are so very safe for almost all ferrets, so easily Given, and so affordable that why even take a risk? We had one ferret on them for over 5 years and others for shorter times. Until she got her final illness in old age the one on them the longest was running so rapidly that she had to lean into turns, and would climb anything. The meds never hurt her but sure did save her.

We have had crashes ourselves. If the ferret winds under stress or the body is meeting extra demands -- for instance if an illness occurs, or the ferret becomes very active -- then having a dose even be borderline could be asking fro trouble. Like Julie we also had one who had to be switched to Percortin during a bad time with diarrhea because the Fludrocort passed too rapidly under those conditions.

An Addisons crisis is fatal if not jumped on in time, and is so easily avoided.
