Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Medication check in
Shannon, we don't even check the sodium:potassium ratio anymore simply because if we have a ferret that is having a difficult recovery from adrenal surgery, we just give the meds -even if they still have one remaining gland. My vet has made sure I have a supply on hand, ever since we lost the little female. Addison's is easier to prevent than treat.
We have had a number of adrenal surgeries where the ferrets had very slow recoveries. We've found giving the pred and Florinef for a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the ferret, helps them bounce back much more quickly. It does no harm. Usually these are kids with huge tumors that have been removed or those that have been on Lupron and melatonin for several months prior to surgery.
Hope this helps.
