Subject: [ferrethealth] Percortin vs. Florinef Re: Medication check in
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>
I have been following the posts on the bilateral adrenalectomy ferrets and
their treatments with florinef and prednisone. My first experience with
Addison's disease, aka, adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism, was when=
my Shih Tzu suddenly collapsed and was diagnosed with it. Having had
difficulty controlling her with florinef and medrol, we switched her to a
monthly Percortin (DOCP) injection with medrol. The effects were dramatic.=
=
After that experience, I have always used Percortin on my ferrets. Not onl=
y
have I found it to be much more effective than Florinef but I found that i=
t
is much easier to manage one monthly injection than trying to administer an=
d
adjust the Florinef orally. In addition, there is never any question about
absorbtion. Also for those ferrets that continue to demonstrate signs of
adrenal disease after bilateral removal, melatonin implants have proved
effective in most cases. =
Just another voice in the treatment of bilateral adrenalectomies.
