Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Violent aversion to food. Vets seem puzzled. Please advise.
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have not been yet to see the bloodwork you mention, which sounds like it =
has been put into the files section, but that glucose figure is consistent =
with insulinoma and every symptom you mention, from the nausea evidence, to=
the speed bumping, to the out of it times are all consistent with untreate=
d insulinoma.

Prednisolone is very safe for ferrets. Talk with your vet about trying som=
e to see what happens. Is your vet familiar with dosing amounts?

The optimal spacing for Carafate for ferrets isn't really known. A wider s=
pacing was recently begun for humans than had been used in the past, but fe=
rrets' digestive tracts work more rapidly so the human spacing may be longe=
r than is needed for a ferret.

Don't be scared of baby food. Major VETS use baby food and the RESULTS hav=
e been good ones though it is not advised as the main food for a protracted=
length of time. Yes, I have read Bob's argument that vets don't study nut=
rition. Remember, Bob's formal nutrition background is not any better than=
the vets' are for that. He has a degree in biology and had been in a grad=
uate program in zooarcheology, so as you see, except for nutrition's overt =
effect on bones and teeth it won't have been part of his education, just as=
in most vet programs nutrition is covered in relation to overt health effe=
cts. Yes, I am definitely sure he looked in nutrition on his own time, but=
so have many of the vets, so I am leery of discounting their opinions on t=
his regard simply because they (as well as he) did not study the topic as a=
formal part of their educations. We all continue to learn, and sometimes =
as we do so different backgrounds, different resources, different experienc=
es, and different ways of weighing factors will cause differing opinions. =
=

So, while baby food is not optimal, I think that people's strong responses =
such as =

>I read the fml bob c post on babyfood =

>yesterday, and it scared me
should call for a moment of calm to reduce over-reaction because if baby fo=
od did not have value then the vets and many others with experience would n=
ot be using baby food within specific limits. (See URL recommended below.)=

I am not saying that BC's diet is a bad one; in fact many people absolutely=
swear by it, so I am certain that it is good and well researched. =

What I AM saying is that I know of no reason to panic about the correct use=
of meat baby foods or a/d for sick ferrets. For more information see:

http://www.afip.org/ferrets/babyfood.html

One thing that I have heard absolute raves about for sick ferrets but have =
not tried myself is a product that is sold by vets: Carnivore Care. In fa=
ct, the level of raves from experienced shelter people has convinced me tha=
t we need to consider that the next time we have a seriously ill ferret (un=
less perhaps it is one of our two who get cystine stones because I don't kn=
ow if it falls within their reduced protein requirements).

sts)
