Subject: [ferrethealth] Obligate Carnivores
To: Ferret Health List <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>, Natural Ferret List <NaturalFerrets@yahoogroups.com>

I have been reading on all sorts of ferret mailing lists, including the two this is sent
to (sorry for the cross-posting if you read both), on ferrets being obligate
carnivores. No mention was ever made of whether or not other fairly common pets
fall under the same category.

I was, therefore, very surprised to learn that cats are obligate carnivores, as well.
Makes sense when I think about it, I just never thought about it. (Dogs are
omnivores, what do lizards and birds fall under, I wonder...)

Since there are so many more cat-owners out there than ferret-owners (they don't
know what they're missing!), I am now wondering why more studies haven't been
done on the effects of plant matter in the food of an obligate carnivore. I know cats
and ferrets are not the same creatures, but there may be some similarity of
information, right?

Or have there been studies, and I've just missed the references to them?

Debbie
