Subject: [ferrethealth] Help! Dying ferret?
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Please forgive me for this post being so long as I am just so
worried that I'm losing my baby.
I'm writing again about my almost 3 year old ferret Mojave.
First history:
In November I took my ferrets to another vet for their shots and to
get another opinion on Komay's spleen. This vet claimed to know ferrets
but from what I've heard he did not. The next day Mojave had an
injection site lump that lasted for several days. Soon after the lump
cleared up he started losing weight. I then took him to my regular
ferret inexperienced vet who said that he looks healthy and she does not
feel anything upon palpation and for me to just monitor him. Soon after
he started to gain weight and was again close to his normal size.
One day in March I came home from work to find him almost anorexic
looking and dehydrated. I called the vet who was on call and she told me
to get fluids and Nutrical into him and she would see him the next day.
The next day when I went to the vet, the vet did a complete blood
workup on him. She noted that his glucose level was at 33 but said that
it was probably because the glucose was still metabolizing when it was
sent in. I went back the next day to have it tested with a glucose meter
and it came back at 66. According to miamiferret it is on the low normal
side. Once again he started to gain the weight back. When I took him in
for a follow up, I believe she said his glucose was 88.
At the beginning of this month, I noticed he was starting to lose
weight but I thought it may just be from the heat and humidity. I bought
an air conditioner on Monday hoping that it would help him maintain his
weight. However, when I got home from work a couple of days ago he was
once again very thin. This time though he would not eat anything except
Totally Ferret Treats.
Last night I was able to get him to lap up a small amount of duck
soup and today he did eat some food when I hand fed him. However, he now
seems weak and lethargic. When I put him on my shoulder he doesn't even
pick his head up all he wants to do is lie there. I was able to get him
to interact with me a little today, but that was for a very short period
of time.
Also, I don't know if he's going to the bathroom. When I let him out
to try to feed him again he was straining like he was going but I'm not
sure if he even peed. I'm going to separate the ferrets in the morning
and see if he does have a BM or urinates.
Does anyone have even the smallest idea of what it may be or of what
tests I should have run? I am really panicking I don't know what to do.
Please help!!

Sheryl

Also, I mentioned the shots because Komay was very healthy except for a
slightly enlarged spleen until soon after the shots. She now has
insulinoma.
