Subject: [ferrethealth] How long for ulcer improvement?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Our poor Mr. Wilson has had a bad run. First it was insulinoma surgery in April, and 4 large and multiple small tumors were removed from his pancreas. Then neither prednisone nor prednisolone nor diazoxide worked to control his blood sugar levels. Finally, Depo-medrol injections appear to have stabilized his blood sugar fairly well, although there's still some ups and downs.
Recently he had a couple of bouts of teeth grinding and very intermittent vomitting, so off to the vet we went again. Suspecting stomach ulcers, he went on Carafate initially that seemed to work for a while. However, last week, he took a bad turn and another trip to the vet resulted in Carafate 4 times/day, Clavamox 2 times/day, Metronidazole 3 times/day, Pepcid 2 times/day and Tramadol 2 times/day. He's been on this regime for 5 days now, and seems to be no better than when he started. His bad times appear to be in the morning and late in the day, but yesterday it was *all* day long. We're feeding him Gerber's Chicken Food (#2 Blue label) regularily, and he's moving his bowels regularily, but it's the black tarry pudding kind. He's in pain quite a bit, and it breaks the heart to hear him grind. Yes, I am following the dosing religiously, and spent 1:30-2:30 am administering medications and waiting between giving Carafate and his other meds to get the max effect.
I know this treatement is supposed to continue for 4-6 weeks based on some of the websites I've seen, and I'll need to discuss with the vet. He seemed to get better, but then slipped back over the last day or so. Any ideas on how long before we should see improvement in his condition? Is it time to hit the panic button and try something else or do I keep doing what we're doing and give it more time?
