Subject: [ferrethealth] Tetanus in Ferrets
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

One of my shelter ferrets recently died and all of her muscles were rigid for a period of
time before she died. I emailed Dr. Williams about this and he said that based on the
description I gave about her, it could have been caused by tetanus. I am thinking that
it was tetanus because she came into the shelter with a puncture wound/cut on her
face that was extremely infected. After doing research on tetanus she had many of the
signs of tetanus.

Does anyone know much about tetanus in ferrets? If ferrets have possibly been
infected with tetanus, how do you treat it? I know tetanus is fairly common in my area,
so I wondering if I get any stray ferrets turned in with cuts on their body, if I should be
worried about them getting tetanus. If anyone has any information about it, I would
love to hear it. Thanks a bunch.
