Subject: [ferrethealth] Herniated disk
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
Does anyone have experience w/a ferret with a herniated disk? Elmo (5
years, neutered) has had a herniated disk for about 18 months but was
stable. The only sign was that he was a bit wobbly in the back end
and clumsy, but got around fine. He seemed to have some pain that was
relieved w/an anti-inflammatory. But, several days ago he became
partially paralyzed in his hind end--almost entirely in the left leg,
but a little movement in the right. He's still able to go potty
normally, though, and drags himself into his box. His vet took x-rays
right away and couldn't see any
change from the previous x-ray, but the assumption is that the disk
ruptured. Elmo's on steroids for the next few days, along with
carafate and zantac, and gets another check on Friday to see if there
has been any improvement, if he's worse or seems to be steady. So far,
no improvement even w/2 steroid shots. And, I actually think there is
slightly less response now than before.
He's willing and able to drag himself around, but it really tires him
out and limits what he can do. And, we don't want the paralysis to
get any worse. Otherwise, he's very healthy and should have some good
years ahead.
Looking for any advice re: spinal surgery or wheels for my honeybear.
Does anyone make wheels for ferrets? I want to know as much as I can
before I meet w/the vet on Friday. Help!
Chelsey
