Subject: [ferrethealth] Gordo..DIM diagnosis...?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello,
I am writing this to let those of you that have sick ferrets and may=
be considering putting them to sleep, to give them a chance if you do not =
have a definitive diagnosis. I have been emailing the group the past 2 week=
s during my ordeal with my ferret Gordo, who was diagnosed with DIM without=
a biopsy on Saturday 8th, July. His bloodwork WBC kept getting progressive=
ly worse, I did 4 ultrasounds, 1 full body xray, 3 bloodtests, a biopsy, an=
d had to force feed every 4 hours and help him out with Sub Q fluids the la=
st few days. His fever was around 104.5 on average, he was lethargic, he ha=
d a fast respiration and would not eat. They put him on Cepha drops and sai=
d he would die soon. I kept up the supportive care at home, and with the gr=
oups help had him changed over to Carafate, Baytril, and Amoxicillin. Over =
the past 4 days, his symptoms began to subside, yet we had good days before=
so I was not so hopeful and had considered putting him to sleep 3x. As of =
today, he is eating on his own, has no fever, his fast respiration is gone.=
He is acting like nothing was ever wrong, aside from being a bit more tire=
d than usual, but this seems to be getting better over the past few days to=
o. Had I taken the diagnosis without any proof, as the gospel, my ferret wo=
uld have been put down, but now he is playing with his buddies in the livin=
g room. I hope that anyone who has an ill ferret yet cannot find the reason=
, will do all they can to find out what it is and if you cannot do so, give=
them the best supportive at home care you can or find someone to adopt the=
m that may be willing to do this for the ferret. I am not positive that thi=
s will not return but I will be doing bloodwork this week and hope for the =
best, since he is now back to himself after 16 days very sick, with each ni=
ght thinking I would wake up to him dead. Keep trying and to those of you w=
ho have sick ferrets, give them lots of love, keep the faith, and hang in t=
here, unless you are positive your ferret is suffering. This is just my opi=
nion but I know this would have made me feel hopeful to hear while I was go=
ing through that. Hopefully you won't hear me talking about Gordo again on =
this list, but if you do, at least we got him back to health at some point =
and gave him better days of romping around :)
