Subject: [ferrethealth] ADV testing
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I think your case is either, pathology for ADV can
look like something else too? Not sure about that one.
or you have a rare case. Perhaps it has to do with the
strain of ADV- or the antibodies the ferret produces to that
ADV strain??? I don't know what would cause the test to read negative with
ADV that aggressive. Is the test you use
the same one United was using?

I have been using the CEP test in NJ for 4 years doing
some volunteer rescue work, it has
been accurate as any test is ( no test is 100%). The AVECON saliva test had
a few false negatives, so we stopped using it. The CEP test does pick up
the ferrets with ADV antibodies- can't tell us if they are shedding virus
or anything. But in those years we continue to pick up
a few ferrets a year by screening. And almost all appear healthy. Without
the test by now the rescue I work with, myself and other foster homes would
have all been exposed and/or infected with the virus. It is possibe a few
are missed by the testing, perhaps if early exposure or not making
antibodies, but 'knock on wood' this does not seem to be the case so far-
since by continually screening the rescue's ferrets and my own- no ferrets
have turned positive nor died with ADV as the cause.

I think it is worth testing, and by knowing which ferrets have the positive
test we can at least hope to curtail the further exposures and infections
just a little. Unfortunately, there will always be a few false negatives
and perhaps things we yet to understand about ADV.

I can understand people who don't feel testing is necessary. I've tested my
ferrets with the Avecon quick saliva test and nobody ever tested positive.
But last year my Reno died of ADV. And this year one of my ferrets died of
pericarditis and the pathology came back that he had ADV yet 2 days before
his death he had blood taken and the CEP test was done and that came back as
negative. I personally haven't had much luck with ADV tests. Pathology
says my ferrets have ADV but the saliva test and CEP test say they are
negative for ADV.

Dr Ruth, which tests do you use?

Ulrike
