This is the length of time that I was told at school. I don't know if the
fluids lose anything. I think the main concern is that once it's open,
bacteria can be introduced into the line or bag and multiply. I took a
census with a couple of techs at work. They said they would keep an open
bag of fluids for no more than a month.
Someone mentioned using a butterfly catheter ("butterfly needle"). Using an
IV line with a needle attached is like using a butterfly catheter. So you
don't really need them if you are using the fluids straight from the bag.
The butterfly catheter is useful if you are giving SQ fluids through a
syringe.
Changing the needle each time it is used is a good idea. Needles dull very
easily.
