Terri,
I don't know if there was an error in your translation of the lab values, but 3.4 or 4.3 is
not a normal ferret BG! It should be somewhere along the lines of one hundred and
something. Ferrets with insuloma are known to drop below 50 and still seem to
function normally. If the ferrets BG was truly that low, fasting it would be the LAST
think you would want to do, it would make it drop lower.
Also, with such a deterioration in general health, it would have been nice to have a
chemistry profile done to rule out things like kidney failure- which would have been a
reason to not give the Metacam drug. This also could have given you a Calcium result
which can sometimes be elevated with tumors. If I was the tech reading the blood
smear, I would have made sure to note to the doctor an increased number of lymphs,
esp. when coupled with his clinical presention.
I am very sorry to hear of your loss, but you are truly a kind person to end his
suffering. I know he will have a forever home in your heart.
