Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Distemper & Rabies Shots
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

Having worked in a practice that saw ferrets, I have seen many that have
allergic reactions to their vaccines. The distemper vaccine is voluntary,
as in it is not required by law, as is rabies. Distemper seems to be the
most common vaccine to cause this anaphylactic reaction. You have two
choices in regards to vaccination. 1) You can decide to not vaccinate
against canine distemper - just don't cause the reaction in the first place.
2) If it is really important for your ferret to get the vaccine, your vet
can premedicate with diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and a steroid about a half
hour before giving the vaccine and then monitor him/her for the rest of the
day in the hospital. The last hospital I worked at had the owner drop off
the ferret, then we would premedicate, vaccinate, and monitor for the day.
ALL ferrets that came in for ANY vaccine were handled this way. We had few
problems and it made owners more comfortable knowing that someone was
watching their baby all day.
