Subject: [ferrethealth] Sick ferret
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I'm very concerned about my baby girl, Sissy. She is the oldest, at 13 mon=
ths, of my 3 ferrets, and the only girl. We purchased her as a young kit i=
n September of 2005. She just wiggled her small self straight into the hea=
rts of our family. So full of life and play. In December we brought home =
Rikki. What a great addition. She had someone to romp and play with const=
antly. In June we brought home Slick (and baby makes 3). At the end of Ju=
ly our happy, healthy ferret home took a scary turn. Sissy had mucusy stoo=
l and began vomiting. I rushed her to my vet (She had just been seen in ma=
y and was a healthy 2.1lbs.) She was xrayed (suspected blockage) and the xr=
ays were inconclusive so she endured a barium xray. It showed no blockage =
and her vital organs looked good. My vet kept her that day. She actually =
took my Sissy home with her for constant care over night. She seemed to bo=
unce back so well. Once we got her home it was only a day or so and she wa=
s back playing with her brothers. 1 week ago she seemed to relapse. Her s=
tool was Tarry and mucusy again. I took her immediatly back to the vet. S=
he was given amoxi ( we are 1 week into the treatment) and she has been ret=
urned to the Carnivore Care diet. She had lost so much weight but over the=
course of the last week has noticably put on weight. However about 3 days=
ago she became lethargic and seems so weak. I know she is eating and eati=
ng well as I am hand feeding her. She is drinking water as well. She has =
very smelly breath and when she "potties" it is exceptionally stinky. Her =
stool is very watery though the color seems to be returning more to the nor=
mal color. I have seperated her from the other two so she can rest. She ha=
s her own cage right next to theirs. Seems like everytime she seems to pro=
gress forward a few steps something sets her back. I'm so afraid that one =
of these vet visits I'm going to hear the words "It's time to let her go". =
I have heard those words 5 times this year (3 rats, 11yr. old cat and the =
hardest my 15yr old beagle, Jethro)I really don't want to hear that, not wi=
th her and not now. She was just 1 yr. old on July 3rd. Anyone out there =
had a situation like this that came out on the happy side? =
Thank you for your time,
Tami
