Subject: [ferrethealth] Cardiomyopathy - pleural effusion, enlarged heart sac, etc.
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I'm waiting to find out what my vet has to say after consulting with a cardiologist, but thought I'd write and ask for any ideas from anyone who knows about or has dealt with this.

Tuesday night her respirations per minute were 88-100+ and the emergency hospital did what they could. They've since been 60-75. Yesterday radiographs showed something taking up 80% of her lung compacity and today we got even worse news after an echocardiogram. It seems all 4 heart chambers are very enlarged, there is pleural effusion and the sac around the heart is badly inflamed. The heart is taking up the lung compacity. Not a tumor, as was supected. I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of time, and even though I've forced myself to think about it from time to time, I'm still not ready or prepared for it.

The heart meds she's taking are: Benazepril, Digoxin and oral Furosemide. I recently added injectable Furosemide (sub-q) because the oral stuff just doesn't seem to be working anymore. The supplements she's on are: Taurine, CoQ10, Vit E and Tumil-K. I've tried different kinds of L-Carnitine but it always seems to cause GI upset. Depending on what the cardiologist says, I plan to ask for Spironolactone, Theophylline and Nitroglycerin paste. I don't know if Hawthorne should be considered since she's on Digoxin and I'm wondering about Dandelion, though I wouldn't know how much to give.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Supplements, herbs, medications, diets, etc.

Thanks in advance.
