Subject: [ferrethealth] Swollen hind leg in ferret
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have a 5 1/2 year old male ferret who recently developed this problem. Up until yesterday morning he was completely fine, nothing wrong with him at all. When I went to clean my ferret room yesterday morning I noticed that he had a swollen right hind leg, it was about twice the size as his other leg. He has a hard lump on the bottom of his foot that was not there before.

He has so other symptoms of anything other then the leg being swollen. He walks fine on it. His eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing are all normal, and he acts just like normal.

We took him to the vet to see what he thought and he really had no idea. He said most likely the swelling was caused by an infection and gave us clavamox. He said if it doesn't get better odds are its cancer that infected the leg.

My boy did have adrenal surgery 2 years ago and had his left adrenal removed, they thought his right adrenal also was cancerous but they couldn't remove it. Thats just some background info about him.

I am wondering if anyone has any idea what could be causing this. The vet was really no help. We first thought that he might have gotten bitten by something, but the vet said that insect/spider bites usually don't lead to swelling in animals. We do have hobo spiders, black widows, wolf spiders, and bees in this area. So it is a high possibility that he could have gotten bitten by something as well.

If anyone has any ideas, feel free to contact me. Thanks a bunch.

Cathy
