Subject: [ferrethealth] vaccine reaction, any changes?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I was wondering if this was still good for vets to follow. Also what is the best for
them to do in a reaction - I have heard no epi but only dex and oxygen, etc.
Thanks!

Vaccine reactions: Reactions have been reported in ferrets following both distemper
and rabies vaccinations. Signs can include diarrhea (sometimes with blood),
vomiting, fever, skin erythema, and collapse. Reactions are usually reported within
minutes of vaccination. Treatment may include IV fluids, diphenhydramine
hydrochloride (0.5-2 mg/kg IV or IM), epinephrine (20 mg/kg IV, IM, SC, or IT), and
slow bolus IV of corticosteroid (prednisolone sodium succinate at 22mg/kg or
dexamethasone sodium phosphate at 6-8 mg/kg).
[Co-Moderator's Note: when we have had ferrets have anaphylactic reactions Epi
has ALWAYS been the most important of the meds given, just as it is for humans
who undergo such reactions. The only ferret we have ever lost to an anaphylactic
reaction did not have his to a vaccine but to an antibiotuic given at home so could
not get care rapidly enough. Epi works very well when it is called for. -- Sukie]
