Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Purevax Backordered
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Merial uses the same production lines for making several things, so each has hiatuses when it is not made. From what I have been told the Purevax vaccine is not the most profitable of the bunch.

I do not personally know the shelf life of Purevax from manufacture date to expiration but given that this is the way that production is handled by that company and given that they currently do not seem to be creating stockpiles (which can be expensive in terms of space required and all the factors the space needs) it certainly pays for hospitals to estimate use needs during the time which fits the known shelf life while the vaccine is still in run and to place an order of vaccine with expiration dates no earlier than a certain date.

This is the manufacturer's standard production practice so it may be that the only way to increase production so that there is enough might be to get vets to estimate and pre-order, unless Merial can be talked into stockpiling, allowing a sub-contractor to produce, or devoting more manufacture time to the drug's production.

I would suspect that the other drugs made in an alternating production facility set-up could have similar problems when not strongly seasonal, so how are those supply short-fall problems over-come, if so?
