Subject: [ferrethealth] FERRET CANT KEEP ANYTHING DOWN HELP!
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi everyone I?m new to the group. I have been a ferret mom for six years. M=
y five year old ferret angel started exhibiting strange behavior on tuesday=
august 29th. She showed very weird stool and has always had good stool. Th=
at following morning she threw up and it looked like spit. I took her to th=
e vet the next night. I had them take blood and check her blood glucose. Sh=
e pooped some nasty stuff when they took her blood and decided she was goin=
g on the dreaded flagyl and amoxydrops. The vet luckily gave her the first =
dose of each medication. She threw them up. The vet advised me to take a 1/=
4 piece of a pepcid, add water and give it to her via the syring, wait 30 m=
inutes and administer the medication. I did that and she seemed fine and wa=
s able to hold it down. That night i did the same thing and she threw up ev=
erything. Now at this point i got her blood work back and that was normal. =
Her blood glucose was also normal. I decided to try and give her the medica=
tion the following morning. She did the same exact thing as the night befor=
e. So i took her into the vet again. She had become severely dehydrated so =
they gave her fluids. They also showed me how to give them. 20cc twice a da=
y. So saturday starts the fun. I give the fluids twice a day. I try force f=
eeding her marshalls via the syringe. She is now extremely weak. Sunday com=
es. She is barely opening her eyes and at the point where she cant stand up=
. I?m freaking out. She ends up having a seizure. I get her out of the seiz=
ure. She also fell over and peed and just layed there. Now mind you she is =
my alpha female and extremely active. This is not the same ferret. Here it =
is almost ten at night i call my vet, i take her in to the office. We do an=
xray, we find nothing. No obstruction, no abnormalities, the heart is good=
. He gives her a shot of reglan and pepcid and we go home. Monday she is ab=
le to eat through out the day. Then monday evening i feed her a tiny bit. O=
ne bite. Then she starts vomiting and making frightening noises. I hear a r=
attling noise. I can hear her stomach gargling. I try to comfort her. The v=
omiting stops. She calms down. Curls into a ball and goes to sleep. Tuesday=
morning fluids. No problems with that. Tuesday night after work i go to th=
e vet. They hospitalize her. Perform new bloodwork. Wednesday she has her u=
ltrasound. Once again we find nothing. Now she is receiving reglan, pepcid =
shot and antibiotics via a needle. We're hoping today thursday she will be =
able to receive her meds orally. They have diagnosed her with irritable bow=
el disease. I trust both my vets completely. One of my vets is world renown=
ed and board certified in avian and exotics. Maybe I?m freaking out. Anyone=
have any ideas or any information please let me know.[moderator's note: ed=
ited to reformat for case and paragraphs]
