Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] Pre-euthanasia - Telazol or Torb?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com, fzylogic@hotmail.com

I use Telazol for all my Euthanasia's ferret or otherwise. It is a small
volume, quick acting, and pretty much puts them out all the way so they
don't feel anything other then the stick (and you can use a really small
guage needle) I use it IM. It also is not as likely to cause hypotention
that makes it harder to find a vein.

Torb is an analgesic not a sedative. I personally don't know the effect is
not the same, but as to if it will work can't say. I wouldn't do it that
way. The closest thing to telazol is ketamine that most vets have but it
lacks the tranquilizing component of telazol altough when out of the former
I have used it. Other drawbacks are a larger quantity is needed, and the
injection can sometimes sting a lot.

Everyone uses a different method. Even if I don't use telazol for normal
procedures it is nice to have around for this procedure. Aliquots can even
be frozen and thawed before use if there is a concern for how long you use
it and it lasts a lot longer. (I would never use the thawed product for IV
injection though. Hope things go well with your little one.

All the best.

Dr. Sue
