Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] RE: Ketamine (offshoot topic from Pre-euthanasia - Telazol or Torb?)
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

In mainland Europe (I know that Germany and Netherlands definitely do),
many, if not most, vets still use injectable anaesthetic/ ketamine on small=

animals (ferrets, skunks, guinea pigs, rabbits...). My current vet here in=

the UK is German and when I she anaesthetised one of my ferrets for the
first time for a dental, she gave her ketamine. Baby took well over 1 hour=

to come round and was restless and disorientated. At home she was running
around as if she was blind and drunk. I was really worried but Baby was
okay the next day. Not sure if she had hallucinations but she was acting
really strange. I was upset when I got the bill and read that she'd had
ketamine, had a talk to my vet and asked her to please never use injectable=

anaesthetic again but gas and she did and was so pleasantly surprised how
well ferrets tolerated gas and how quickly they woke up so she's been a big=

fan of gas ever since. She is an excellent vet and has read up on ferrets
so much so except for this first "mishap", I have been very happy with her.=

Most don't, but I have heard of some who still do, so perhaps the topic may=

make a few people think twice. It hasn't come up in some time.

I am curious is the frightening hallucination side effect may take place fo=
r
no reason more than curiosity.

Steve and I had to have some ferrets have surgery ages ago before gas was
standardly used. It used to often be hard to get them to come out of being=

physically depressed by the injected anesthesia and getting back their body=

temperature could be difficult.
