Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] liver spleen enlargement is 6-8 yo female
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

My ferret is almost 7 yo, his spleen is enlarged as well, he had an
ultrasound done and everything is normal, my vet told me that it is very
common in older ferrets to have an enlarged spleen. You said there are two
lumps, I would suggest that you do get an ultrasound done because usually an
enlarged spleen is only one. With thinning hind quarters, that is not
normal, it is not nescessarily weight loss, it could be muscle mass loss.
Have you had her glucose checked? Ferretts with insulinoma usually have
muscle loss and enlarged spleens, I would check this first. Has she had
periods of fatigue, or drooling? Where do you live? I only know of one good
ferret vet and that is in Phoenix, Az.

[Co-Moderator's Note: there are ferret vet listings with multiple ferret vets, and for
Texas it is actually extensive. One regular FHL veterinary advisor is Dr. Jerry Murray
who is in TX. Go to the Reference Shelf in the Links section at

or go directly to
http://ferrethealth.org/vets/vets.shtml
Multiple addresses of vet listings can be found in the FHL archives, for example in
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/SG15794
but some have moved and some are defunct.]
