Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Pre-euthanasia - Telazol or Torb?
To: fzylogic@hotmail.com
Hi there,
Sorry to hear you're in this position. My vet *used* to use Telazol
and it worked great, but she moved practices a few years ago, and the
newer place does not stock it. I've had a few ferrets put to sleep
since then. I have not seen her use torb by itself as a pre-medicine
for euthanasia. It will make them very groggy, but they still will
react to pain, unless perhaps the dose is higher than I've ever seen.
I don't like to see them fighting Iso either and have not used that
for euthanasia.
Sub-q vs IM torb. Both will work. IM is more painful but probably
will take effect more quickly. Torb is a little stingy even sq, but
less so if some ringers or normal saline is pulled up into the syringe
with it. And distract with ferretone or other treat during the shot
if the ferret is still interested in such things.
So anyway, without telazol, my vet has used a couple of different
things as a pretreatment. One was Domitor. I think she gave it IM,
but it might be that it could go SQ as well. That ferret appeared to
be totally sedated; nothing would rouse her. My vet uses veins when
possible for the euthanasia solution, so I can't comment on the heart
stick, but with Domitor, the ferret did not give any appearance of
noticing at all while the IV injection was given. The other thing
she's used as a pre-treatment was a mix of Torb, ketamine, and
something else... I want to say acepromazine but I'm just not 100%
sure. It, too, seemed to work well. If the vet has a standard
"cocktail" of two or more drugs they often use in cats/dogs, that will
probably work fine. I'd avoid pure ketamine by itself, however.
Hope that helps a little bit...
