Subject: [ferrethealth] best time to check blood glucose needed
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I am trying to establish a more accurate BG trail for 2 insulinomic male ferrets, Diablo and Fuzzy. They are on Prednisilone 2Xday and for AD melatonin and Lupron.

Since the Prednisolone is given at noon and at midnight when should I test the blood and what am I really looking for? Are we trying to establish the lowest the bg will go or are we looking at how low it is after a certain length of time? They get either AD (25% of a can) or half a jar of Gerbers meat baby food.I mix the Pred and water in the food. Free choice kibble (Natural Gold, Evo ferret mix)

It is my understanding that Prednisolone has a half life of 4 hours? I have heard test 4 hours after meds and fasted, 8 hours after, and also right before the next dose? Which, if any are correct? I am testing at home with a human meter. I realize the numbers don't quite match but I am only trying to establish a pattern for now. thanks, MJB
