Subject: [ferrethealth] Heart problems - rapid shallow breathing
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have a six year old 3 lb. insulinomic male that has been recently diagnosed with heart disease. His Xray (done 8-11-06) showed a slightly enlarged heart and fluid in his lungs. He had just begun coughing and I could feel his spleen was very large. He was put on .2 of Lasix and .5 of Albon at that point along with his year long regimen of .2 predlisone BID and Diaoxide .2 qd. He was still having problems with shallow, rapid breathing and was prescribed (two weeks ago) 1cc of Theolate (Theophylline) to help him breath easier. Enacard was discussed at that time but his lungs were staying clear with the Lasix so my vet decided to wait. We did a Ferretonin at that time because he had had unilateral adrenal surgery with prostate complications. Chocolate was doing well.

He is now started to breathe very rapidly and shallow. He has started coughing again this past weekend. I upped his Lasix to .35 but it isn't helping. He is eating really well (to well as he has put on a lot of weight) but his spleen continues to be large even after beginning the Albon again. He wants to come out, is eager for his babyfood after his pred but has no energy at all. His rapid and shallow breathing are starting to make it difficult for him to do anything.

I have dealt with heart disease in the past but I'm stumped. I intend to call my vet tomorrow but in the meantime any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Earlicks and toebitings to all,

Trish
