Subject: [ferrethealth] There's nothing wrong but food isn't moving from stomach to intestines
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
My 6 month old ferret Kimi had 3 black tarry stools and was growing weaker by the hour. I took her to a ferret specialist and was put on supportive care and antibiotics but it didn't help. X-rays and a barium study showed no blockage but since she was going down hill fast surgery was performed and her stomach and intestines were flushed and a small amount of claylike gravelly material was found in her stomach. After surgery she improved for a day until the food begin to build back up in her stomach again, she went back downhill again. A second exploratory surgery was performed and biopsies were taken but the vet could not see anything wrong. Her stomach just isn't working and he can see no reason why it isn't. He has placed a tube directly into her intestines to try to feed her until he can figure out what's wrong with her.
Has anyone seen or heard of a case like this? She is a young strong ferret and if we can find a way to help her soon I know she can pull through. Thanks.
