Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: There''s nothing wrong but food isn''t moving from stomach to intestines
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have had 3 similar cases. We thought Zoe had a hairball but when we opened her she had what looked like a small 'rubber band' of tissue constricting the exit of her stomach. My vet gently sliced the surface until it released enough that the food then began emptying from her stomach.

With two others, their stomaches just did not empty anymore. Max's stomach was huge -about the size of a small woman's fist. He needed large amounts of carafate to combat the ulcers (it was around 2.0 mls given 50 to 60 minutes before his soft food)and Reglan to push the food through his system. Once we fixed the ulcers, and got the food moving through, he did fine on the Reglan until his kidneys failed.

Silver's stomach wouldn't empty either. Again, he presented like a blockage, and since I knew he had a growth on his intestines, I was afraid it had grown and was obstructing the passing of material, but we found only a stomach full of food. There were no obstructions. The grapelike growth still hadn't changed much and neither vet cared to tamper with it due to interrupting blood supply to the intestine nor was there a hairball. My vet could easily push the food out of his stomach and into the intestines. Silver was also put on Reglan and did very well on it until he passed from an unrelated cause.

If your vet has verified no obstructions, he should be willing to try Kimi on Reglan since the only contraindication is an obstruction, according to my vet. I've had very good results with stomach issues with this med.

In such a young ferret, has your vet considered a problem with the pancreas, gall bladder or liver? Could the gravel like material have been something like little gall stones? Could she be lacking digestive secretions? Just a question for your, or our, vets.

Have the biopsies come back yet and were inconclusive or are you still waiting?
